Your Filipina Wife And Why You Should Study Filipino Culture

Although marriage to a Filipina wife is easier than being married to someone from another Asian country, it doesn't mean you won't have any adjustments to make after the wedding night. After all, despite being heavily influenced by American culture, Filipinos have retained unique parts of their culture.

Being sterner Catholics than the Catholics in Rome is really just one part of it. In this lens, we will discuss some points about Filipino culture that every foreigner must know, especially those who are married or want to get married to Filipino women.

Below are the most trivial, yet very fundamental, of them. Filipina Wife Culture -1

* They will make you try the balut.

Most Filipinos would like to get a ribbing from you trying out the balut, which is actually boiled duck's egg with an 18-day old chick in it. While the balut is very tasty with spicy vinegar and salt, most foreigners (even the men) cannot stomach seeing beaks, wings, and feet when they're eating it.

Being made to eat balut is one of those "rite of passage" things that most foreigners encounter when befriending Filipinos. It's like you will experience this too.

* They love to drink up or "tagay".

Filipinos drink to get drunk, and tagay is actually the local term for a drinking session. But even if it's for inebriation, there is etiquette to the tagay. Participants sit around a table with only one big bottle of drink and one glass. Each person takes a turn at drinking a glass bottoms up. A "gunner" pours the drink for every one at the table, and he himself does not drink at all. If you are in a tagay session, do not refuse the drink, unless if you want to be known as snobbish or "arte".

* Beer is San Miguel, and tuba and bahalina are popular too.

San Miguel is the most popular beer brand in the Philippines with virtually no competitors. In a tagay session, you'll most likely be downing a liter of San Miguel Pale Pilsen or a Red Horse drink (also by San Miguel). If not beer, you'll most likely be drinking "tuba" or "bahalina". Although they both come from coconut sap, bahalina is bitterer and stronger than tuba.

* All white guys are Joes. Filipina Wife Culture -2

Filipinos who aren't aware of the world's different cultures tend to lump all the white men who cross their path as "Kano" or "Amerkano", no matter if he's actually from Germany. This can only be explained by the fact that Filipino culture is so into American culture. Don't be offended then if out in public places someone asks if you're an American.

* They love to be entertained.

Filipinos are basically a happy-go-lucky bunch. Some are evenlazy. The typical Filipino would be preoccupied with entertainment, from karaoke, noontime TV game shows, and boxing superstars like Manny Pacquiao. Filipinos don't take politicians seriously, either.

Final Note

In all, it would seem that Filipinos in general are a happy-go-luck bunch that don't take life too easily. In all likelihood, every Filipino woman you'll know will reflect this in her personality - like being generally happy without expecting too much out of life.

Perhaps this is one reason why many Filipino women are married to Western men who are older than they are - most older men are settled and would rather take it easy compared to younger men who have yet to prove themselves.
